What is Addiction?

There are many stigmas associated with addiction. Some people refer to addiction as a ‘moral’ or ‘character’ issue. Scientific research and evidence show addiction to stem from biological, neurological, and genetic origins. Addiction is not simply an issue of will power.

Drug Abuse and Addiction

Drug abuse is the use of drugs in an amount or at a frequency that is harmful to users and the people around them. Addiction is a chronic brain disease that causes obsessive drug seeking and consumption, regardless of the consequences.

Heroin Addiction

Once considered an urban problem, heroin is now everywhere and touches age groups as young as early high school students. The cycle of cravings following heroin use makes quitting very difficult.

Prescription Drug Addiction

One of the most significant substance abuse problems is the rise in prescription medication abuse. Between 2005 and 2011, 15.7 million Americans reported having used prescription drugs for “non-medical” purposes.

Opiate Addiction

Opiates (like heroin and morphine) suppress pain, cause euphoria, and suppress the emotional response to pain. The tolerance to these drugs develops rapidly. Dependence and addiction can follow quickly.

Cocaine Addiction

Cocaine is a powerful drug that causes feelings of euphoria and energy by overstimulating the brain’s pleasure and motivation centers. Users become accustomed to the effects of cocaine and dependent upon it to feel pleasure.

Crack Addiction

A crack is a smokable form of cocaine. As powerful as cocaine is at causing feelings of euphoria by overstimulating the brain’s pleasure centers, Crack is worse. Crack has a very intense but very short lasting high that rapidly leads to addiction.

Marijuana Addiction

Regardless of legalization efforts, marijuana is a drug and marijuana addiction is real. Chronic marijuana users often experience adverse physical and psychological effects when they try to quit.

Alcohol Abuse and Addiction

Although legal, alcohol is a substance that can devastate the lives and health of the people who abuse or become addicted to it, as well as the people around them.
